2018 Kentucky Derby Odds: Justify Looking Sharp

With less than two weeks remaining before the 2018 Kentucky Derby, it looks like Justify might be the horse to beat at Churchill Downs. He was the 4/1 co-favorite with Mendelssohn on the horse racing futures market heading into the weekend; odds are pending at press time, but Justify has drawn praise for Saturday’s latest workout at Santa Anita Park, dusting off six furlongs in 1:13.


Justify’s star continues to shine despite only racing three times for trainer Bob Baffert. The Kentucky-bred colt’s April 7 victory over former favorite Bolt d’Oro at the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby was clocked at a Beyer Speed Figure of 107, after he posted a 104 in his debut and a 101 at an allowance race – all on the dirt at Santa Anita. Justify is trying to become the first horse since Apollo (1882) to win the Run for the Roses without having raced as a 2-year-old.

Also putting in solid work over the weekend: Good Magic, the reigning Breeders’ Cup Juvenile champion. The Chad Brown-trained colt was available at 8/1 after winning the G2 Blue Grass Stakes, but could improve after putting in four furlongs in 48 seconds at Keeneland.

Is Justify the horse to beat at the 2018 Kentucky Derby? The Bob Baffert-trained colt went into the weekend as 4/1 co-favorites with Mendelssohn, but could improve after working six furlongs in 1:13 at Santa Anita Park on Saturday. Odds are pending at press time.



Good Magic, who was fourth on the Kentucky Derby futures market at 8/1, is also looking strong after working out at Keeneland on Saturday. The reigning Breeders’ Cup Juvenile champion put in four furlongs for trainer Chad Brown at 48 seconds, and six furlongs in 1:14.
