E-Sports : The International Keeps Getting Bigger

Every year, The International sets a new record. This is by far the largest E-sports tournament in the world, with a prize pool of $18.7 million (and growing) up for grabs in 2016. The best Dota 2 teams from around the world will gather at KeyArena in Seattle, starting August 3 and wrapping up with the Grand Finals on August 13. And the best of the best, leading the way at +250, is the juggernaut known as OG.

There isn't a hotter team on the planet right now. OG (hailing from Europe and captained by
Tal “Fly” Aizik) have already won two Dota 2 majors this year, the Manila Major and the ESL One Frankfurt. No other team has won more than one official Valve Corporation event – Valve being the developers and publishers of Dota 2.

As usual, Team Liquid are the one team in the 18-team field (including the four Wild Cards) expected to give OG a serious run for their money. These European rivals have been at each other's throats all year, with OG usually getting the better of it. Team Liquid are +400 at press time; Wings Gaming (+550) and Newbee (+650) are the second-tier contenders.

E-Sports : The International Keeps Getting Bigger

E-Sports Odds: OG, Team Liquid Collide at the International
With two Dota 2 majors already under their belts, OG are the +250 favorites to take down the biggest E-sports tournament of them all, the International. Seattle's KeyArena will once again play host, starting August 3 and ending with the Grand Finals on August 13.

OG's toughest competition should come from Team Liquid (+400), although most of their battles have gone OG's way of late. The ESL One Manila champions from Wings Gaming (+550) could have some value after their successful roster shuffle. And the 2014 TI winners, Newbee (+650), are on the rise after snatching Kaka from EHOME (+3300).

MLB : Nationals, Indians Clash in Battle of First-Place Teams

Two first-place teams wrap up a two-game set on Wednesday, when the AL Central's Cleveland Indians host the NL East's Washington Nationals.

Stephen Strasburg (13-1 W-L, 2.83 ERA) gets the call for the Nationals after coming off his first loss of the season. Strasburg was knocked around for six runs on seven hits over six innings in a 3-6 home loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Although Strasburg struck out 10, he was taken deep twice. Still, this is the 28-year-old's best season in the majors. He’s faced the Indians twice before, going 1-1 with an ERA of 1.74. He’s 6-0 in seven road starts this season with an ERA of 1.99.

The Indians counter with Carlos Carrasco (7-3 W-L, 2.31 ERA), who tossed six innings of one-hit ball in an 11-4 win over the Kansas City Royals. Carrasco struck out six and walked two. It was the third time this season that he had thrown at least six shutout innings. While Strasburg gets more attention, the 29-year-old Carrasco is also having his best season yet in the big leagues. This will be Carrasco's first time going up against the Nationals. He’s 2-1 in six home starts with a 3.24 ERA.

MLB : Nationals, Indians Clash in Battle of First-Place Teams

MLB Odds: Indians, Nationals Wrap Up First-Place Showdown
The Cleveland Indians and Washington Nationals are both leading their respective divisions (the American League Central and the National League East) heading into their series, which wraps up on Wednesday in Cleveland.

Two pitchers having banner seasons will square off; the Nationals go with Stephen Strasburg, who finally was handed his first loss of the season in his last start. Strasburg has a 13-1 W-L record with an ERA of 2.83, and he’s been lights out on the road, going 6-0 in seven starts with a 1.99 ERA. The Indians will give the ball to Carlos Carrasco, who has a 7-3 W-L record with an ERA of 2.31 and was almost perfect in his last outing.

MLB : Jays on the March in San Diego

Maybe the Toronto Blue Jays should move to the National League. After sweeping back-to-back games against the Arizona Diamondbacks last week, the Jays (56-44, -0.26 betting units) have the opportunity to take advantage of the San Diego Padres (43-57, +1.28 units). They'll meet in the finale of a three-game series this Wednesday at Rogers Centre, starting at 12:37 PM ET on Sportsnet.

Marco Estrada (4.08 FIP) is scheduled to do the honours for Toronto. Estrada has nine quality starts in his last 10 games, but the Jays have dropped three of his last four to fall 1.93 units in the red on a team record of 9-8. San Diego rookie Luis Perdomo (4.84 FIP), on the other hand, is up 5.80 units on a record of 6-3, and he's allowed just nine earned runs in four July starts.

This game is of special interest because the Blue Jays are reportedly the front-runners to land Padres outfielder Melvin Upton Jr. (.743 OPS) before the August 1 non-waiver trade deadline. Upton has played reasonably well since arriving in San Diego last year, although Toronto's outfield has been replenished with the return of Jose Bautista (.816 OPS) from the disabled list.

MLB : Jays on the March in San Diego

MLB Odds: Will the Blue Jays Trade for Melvin Upton?
The Toronto Blue Jays (56-44, -0.26 betting units) are hosting the San Diego Padres (43-57, +1.28 units) this week at Rogers Centre, but Padres outfielder Melvin Upton Jr. might end up staying north of the border once this three-game series wraps up Wednesday afternoon (12:37 PM ET, SNET).

Rumor has it the Jays are front-runners to land Upton (.743 OPS) before the August 1 non-waiver deadline. They could use his bat against Wednesday's scheduled starter for San Diego, rookie Luis Perdomo (4.84 FIP). Toronto responds with Marco Estrada (4.08 FIP), who has nine solid starts in his last 10 appearances.

Politics : Trump Still Behind Clinton, But Gaining

We could be just four months away from electing Donald Trump as the 44th President of the United States. At press time, the Republican Party is still the +190 underdog to beat Hillary Clinton and the Democrats, but Trump continues to gain ground, while Clinton's approval ratings have been slipping.

Trump's rise to the top of the GOP didn't happen overnight. His presidential odds have been improving for the most part since late 2013, when Trump was a 150/1 long shot. Recent terror attacks around the globe and at home have given the Republican nominee a boost at the polls, although his political strategy appears to focus on attacking Clinton. The Democratic Party is -230 to win the presidency; on July 6, Clinton was available at -340.

Expect Trump's odds to narrow even further once he speaks Thursday night to close out the 2016 Republican National Convention. There doesn't seem to be too much Trump can say or do that will put off his growing legion of followers. And thanks to the Electoral College system, Trump can become President without winning the popular vote, as George W. Bush did in 2000.

Politics : Trump Still Behind Clinton, But Gaining

Politics Odds: Trump Gaining Ground on Clinton
Donald Trump is now the official Republican Party nominee for the 2016 US presidential election. But will he win? Trump's chances are improving; at press time, his party is still the +190 underdog, but on July 6, Trump was listed at +280.

While Trump has been rallying his supporters at the Republican National Convention, Hillary Clinton's approval ratings have been falling. Her opportunity to bounce back comes next week at the Democratic convention, where she'll accept her party's nomination and announce her running mate. Until then, Trump and the GOP are on the attack.

MLB : Jays Battle Snakes in Desert

After dropping two of three in Oakland to start the second half of the season, the Toronto Blue Jays (52-42, –1.56 units) will wrap up a two-game series Wednesday afternoon against the Arizona Diamondbacks (40-53, –13.46 units). First pitch is at 3:40 PM ET on Sportsnet.

Both of Wednesday's pitchers are coming off bad starts for their respective teams. Last Friday, Marcus Stroman (4.12 FIP) gave up six earned runs to the A's (+142) in a 7-8 loss, while Patrick Corbin (5.20 FIP) did the same against the Los Angeles Dodgers, who prevailed 13-7 as –135 road favourites. Toronto is just 2-6 in Stroman's last eight starts; the Snakes are 7-12 on the season with Corbin and 3-7 in his last 10.

The Blue Jays are still waiting on the return of injured outfielder Jose Bautista (.815 OPS). He's been out since mid-June with a case of turf toe; the latest word is that Bautista might not be back until early August. His bat will be slightly less important this Wednesday with National League rules in effect, but while Corbin is struggling on the mound, he's outperforming Bautista at the plate, posting a .825 OPS with 14 hits in 40 at-bats.

MLB : Jays Battle Snakes in Desert

MLB Odds: Jays-Snakes in Interleague Action
Marcus Stroman (4.12 FIP) has had some issues on the mound this season. His bat will also come into play Wednesday afternoon when the Toronto Blue Jays visit Patrick Corbin (5.20 FIP) and the Arizona Diamondbacks, starting at 3:40 PM ET on Sportsnet.

Stroman doesn't get many opportunities to hit; he has two official at-bats on his CV, both from earlier this year, and both were flyball outs. Corbin (.825 OPS), on the other hand, is the best-hitting pitcher in the game right now, although he's struggled to rediscover his All-Star form since undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2014.

MLB : Red Sox, Giants Square Off in Boston

Two teams in the thick of the postseason hunt will wrap up a two-game set on Wednesday, when the Boston Red Sox host the San Francisco Giants. Game time is 7 PM ET with ESPN providing coverage.

The Giants earned a win the last time Matt Cain (1-5, 5.34 ERA) was on the mound despite him lasting just 3.2 innings. He gave up three runs on five hits in an 11-5 win over the Milwaukee Brewers, striking out three and walking five. He then went on the disabled list with a bad hamstring, making this his first start since June 13. The 31-year-old righty has faced the Red Sox once, pitching well in a 0-1 loss in Boston back in June 2007.

The Red Sox will start with Drew Pomeranz (8-7, 2.47 ERA), who is making his debut after being traded from San Diego. In his last start, he tossed seven scoreless innings in a 6-0 shutout of the Los Angeles Dodgers, giving up two hits, striking out six and walking two. Having played in the National League West, Pomeranz is very familiar with the Giants; he’s already pitched 17.1 innings against them this season alone.

MLB : Red Sox, Giants Square Off in Boston

MLB Odds: World Series Contenders Face Off in Boston
Two teams with a good shot of going to the World Series meet Wednesday for part 2 of a two-game series, as the Boston Red Sox host the San Francisco Giants.

Drew Pomeranz, who was traded from San Diego over the All-Star break, is making his debut for Boston. He faces a team he’s very familiar with, having pitched against the Giants three times this season with a 0-2 result and an ERA of 2.60. The Giants respond with Matt Cain, who was struggling this season before suffering a hamstring injury and being put on the disabled list for a month.

2016 American Century Golf Championship

Entertainment : Celebs, Athletes Mingle at American Century Championship

Celebrity golf returns to NBC next week with the 2016 American Century Celebrity Golf Classic, also known as the American Century Championship. Big-name athletes and celebs will descend on Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course in Stateline, Nevada, starting on Tuesday, July 19 and wrapping up the following Sunday. At press time, reigning champion Mark Mulder and US tennis player Mardy Fish are the +333 co-favorites.

Most of the celebrities on display will be athletes or retired athletes, and they almost always win the tournament. Mulder, for example, was a two-time All-Star pitcher for the Oakland Athletics, then won the 2006 World Series with the St. Louis Cardinals. Other champions include former NFL quarterback Mark Rypien, who won the inaugural event in 1990 and again in 2014. Rypien is the third favorite for this year's Classic at +450.

Only one “non-athlete” has ever won the Classic, although former General Hospital star Jack Wagner (+700) did play football and basketball in high school, and won the Missouri JUCO golf championship in 1980. Wagner took down the Classic in 2006 and 2011, but at age 56, he might have a harder time keeping up with the competition next week.

Mark Mulder will return to Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course next week to defend his title at the  American Century Celebrity Golf Classic. At press time, the former All-Star pitcher is the +333 co-favorite, alongside US tennis player Mardy Fish.

Two other former Classic champions will join Mulder next Tuesday: ex-NFL quarterback Mark Rypien (+450), who won the inaugural event in 1990 before doubling up in 2014, and General Hospital alumnus Jack Wagner (+700), who took the title in 2006 and 2011. Wagner's the only “non-athlete” ever to win the Classic, although he was the Missouri JUCO golf champion in 1980.
