MLB : Jays Battle Snakes in Desert

After dropping two of three in Oakland to start the second half of the season, the Toronto Blue Jays (52-42, –1.56 units) will wrap up a two-game series Wednesday afternoon against the Arizona Diamondbacks (40-53, –13.46 units). First pitch is at 3:40 PM ET on Sportsnet.

Both of Wednesday's pitchers are coming off bad starts for their respective teams. Last Friday, Marcus Stroman (4.12 FIP) gave up six earned runs to the A's (+142) in a 7-8 loss, while Patrick Corbin (5.20 FIP) did the same against the Los Angeles Dodgers, who prevailed 13-7 as –135 road favourites. Toronto is just 2-6 in Stroman's last eight starts; the Snakes are 7-12 on the season with Corbin and 3-7 in his last 10.

The Blue Jays are still waiting on the return of injured outfielder Jose Bautista (.815 OPS). He's been out since mid-June with a case of turf toe; the latest word is that Bautista might not be back until early August. His bat will be slightly less important this Wednesday with National League rules in effect, but while Corbin is struggling on the mound, he's outperforming Bautista at the plate, posting a .825 OPS with 14 hits in 40 at-bats.

Marcus Stroman (4.12 FIP) has had some issues on the mound this season. His bat will also come into play Wednesday afternoon when the Toronto Blue Jays visit Patrick Corbin (5.20 FIP) and the Arizona Diamondbacks, starting at 3:40 PM ET on Sportsnet.

Stroman doesn't get many opportunities to hit; he has two official at-bats on his CV, both from earlier this year, and both were flyball outs. Corbin (.825 OPS), on the other hand, is the best-hitting pitcher in the game right now, although he's struggled to rediscover his All-Star form since undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2014.
