MLB Odds: Lefty-on-Lefty Violence in Mets-Dodgers Matchup

The 2017 season has gotten off to a lousy start for the New York Mets (31-37, –14.14 betting units). It won’t get any easier when they head West for a four-game series with the impressive Los Angeles Dodgers (44-26, +7.56 units). Game 3 of that series is Wednesday night, beginning at 10 PM ET on ESPN.

Most of New York’s troubles can be traced to injuries in the starting rotation, but promising lefty Steven Matz (3.39 FIP last year) is expected to start Wednesday’s game. This will be his third start of the season; Matz had his breakout 2016 campaign cut short by a bone spur in his left elbow, but he’s pitched quite well since making his return, allowing five earned runs in 14 innings with just one walk.
Fellow southpaw Rich Hill (5.31 FIP) isn’t having much success following up on his surprise results from 2016. The Dodgers have split his eight starts for a loss of 1.78 units, but Hill didn’t make it past the fifth inning in any of those games. He might still be bothered by a blister on his left middle finger that has already landed him on the 10-day DL twice this season.
