NBA Odds: Can Rockets Cover Kings Minus ‘Melo?

It isn’t official yet at press time, but it looks like the Houston Rockets (6-7 SU, 5-8 ATS) are consciously uncoupling from Carmelo Anthony. That should give the Rockets added betting value this Saturday when they host the Sacramento Kings (8-6 SU, 9-5 ATS); tip-off is at 8 PM ET. Houston are 2-1 SU and ATS since Anthony was put on the shelf with an undisclosed illness.

That illness appears to be a front. The Rockets are said to be in discussions with Anthony and his representatives about what his role will be going forward; all indications are that the former All-Star has played his last game for Houston. Rookie Gary Clark has taken on a larger role in Anthony’s absence, although he left Tuesday’s win over the Denver Nuggets with a hip contusion and is listed as day-to-day.

The Kings, meanwhile, are finally reaping the rewards from all those years of tanking. Point guard De’Aaron Fox (drafted No. 5 overall in 2017) has made significant progress as a sophomore, joining center Willie Cauley-Stein (No. 6, 2015) in a promising young lineup that’s been bolstered by the arrival of veterans PF Nemanja Bjelica and SG Iman Shumpert.

The Rockets appear to be moving on from Carmelo Anthony – a very good idea at this point. However, his replacement at power forward, rookie Gary Clark, suffered a hip contusion on Tuesday and remains day-to-day at press time. Clark has given Houston the defensive presence Anthony has lacked for virtually his whole career.
