When they last met in June, Max Holloway (ic) defeated Jose Aldo (c) to unify the UFC Featherweight Championship at UFC 212. Holloway was a +120 underdog in that bout; at press time, he’s a heavy –305 favorite for the Saturday main-event rematch at UFC 218, live on pay-per-view from Little Caesars Arena in Detroit. It wasn’t that long ago when Aldo (26-3 lifetime, 8-2 UFC) was considered one of the best fighters in the sport. Nothing was the same after Conor McGregor knocked him out in 13 seconds at UFC 194 and took the Featherweight title Aldo had held since it was created in 2010. Aldo beat Frankie Edgar (–145) for the interim title last year, then was promoted to undisputed champion after McGregor won the Lightweight belt and left the division.

Holloway (18-3 lifetime, 14-3 UFC) earned the interim Featherweight title after scoring a third-round TKO win over Anthony Pettis (+200) at UFC 206, then did the same to Aldo (–195) after appearing to lose the first two rounds. Volume striking was the key to Holloway’s success, eventually wearing down Aldo’s once-impregnable defense and landing with power.

Jose Aldo will try to recapture the Featherweight title this Saturday in Detroit when he faces Max Holloway (–305) in the main event of UFC 218. Aldo lost the title to Holloway (+120) via third-round TKO last June at UFC 212.

Aldo is a late replacement for Frankie Edgar, who pulled out of this fight on November 11 citing injury. In his title unification bout with Holloway, the interim champion at the time, Aldo appeared to win the first two rounds before Holloway’s volume striking finally broke down his defenses in the third.
